The Minnesota Trucking Association (MTA) named Roseville, MN resident, Scott Smith, professional truck driver for BarOle Trucking, an intermodal carrier in Roseville, MN, the 2020 Minnesota Driver of the Year at its virtual Driver of the Year Award Ceremony on February 25, 2021.

“This award is a great way to honor the best in our industry. Driving safe is no easy task, especially when you take into consideration his daily driving conditions like congestion, driver distractions, Minnesota winters, and the added challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Having over 4.6 million safe driving miles is an outstanding accomplishment,” says John Hausladen, MTA president.  “We’re proud to award Scott for this achievement.”

“Scott has been driving with BarOle Trucking since 1997 and is well-recognized in the intermodal community here in the Twin Cities, said Karol Smith, Safety Director at BarOle Trucking. " Scott operates with very high standards. He is knowledgeable in the equipment he handles and follows unwavering safety protocols in his daily operating. Many drivers in our fleet look to him for his experience with intermodal equipment.”  In addition to being a great example of what it means to be an outstanding professional truck driver, Scott served as a Boy Scout leader since 2003 and after retiring from that position, now serves as Assistant Scout Master. He also volunteers with MTA’s Trucks & Toys campaign, providing toys to children in need throughout the state during the holiday season, and enjoys volunteering as a judge at the Minnesota Truck Driving Championships.

Throughout 2020, exceptional drivers were nominated by their companies and one driver is chosen each month to be the Driver of the Month. The drivers who are chosen meet a high standard of requirements including an outstanding driving and work record; contribution to industry and highway safety; and involvement in the community. One of the twelve nominees is then selected as Driver of the Year by a panel of judges including Matthew Marin, Division Administrator for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Shelly Meyer, MnDOT and Captain Jon Olsen, Minnesota State Patrol.
